From 1999 to 2006, the defunct Robert Mueller Airport near downtown Austin lay dormant. In 2007 we saw the Dell Children’s Hospital spring up there, and lately a group of large stores like 'Best Buy' and 'Bed Bath and Beyond' have become visible from I35. A drive through the new streets since late 2007 shows the massive progress that the home builders have made in the redevelopment. Mueller’s first residents moved in at the end of 2007
The Mueller Pioneer program involved a lottery system early in 2007. This lottery allocated the initial 340 homes in phase one of the development, which will eventually be home to 10,000 residents. The lottery was very heavily subscribed - Austinites were keen to be part of the new master plan. With its four residential neighborhoods there will be more opportunities to work, shop, or play within a short walk from your home.
Mueller is designed by developer Catellus to be an urban village, an example of the 'new urbanism' an urban village close to UT, downtown and the heart of Central East Austin. It is a master planned community with mixed use - commercial, retail, residential, and best of all, parks!
Mueller is also the only development in Austin where the McMansion Ordinance does not apply - this means that residential density is high (houses are close together). One of the visions for Mueller is less dependence on automobiles - bus routes and trolley stops are planned to be part of the greenification of the old airport. Another vision is a closer sense of community, so front porches are the norm.
